The 3rd International Husbandry, Health, and Conservation Conference: A Crucial Gathering for Gibbon Conservation

As the vibrant 8th Asia Primate Symposium unfolded, the event provided the perfect backdrop for the 3rd Gibbon Health, Husbandry, and Conservation Conference, held concurrently from November 16th to 19th, 2022. This specialized gathering brought together 40 dedicated delegates from 12 organizations around the world, all unified by a singular mission: the protection and preservation of gibbons.

A Global Consortium for Gibbon Conservation

Following the success of the 8th Asia Primate Symposium, Vietnam will host another landmark event in the field of wildlife conservation: the 3rd International Husbandry, Health, and Conservation Conference, held on November 17-18, 2022, at the Vietnam National University of Forestry (VNUF). This event brings together leading experts in gibbon conservation, husbandry, and veterinary science, building on the foundations laid by the previous conferences in North Carolina (2012) and Perth Zoo (2015).

The 3rd International Gibbon Health, Husbandry, and Conservation Conference attracted a consortium of gibbon experts, representing institutions dedicated to the conservation of these small apes. With a focus on enhancing husbandry practices, veterinary care, and conservation strategies, the conference became a central platform for sharing knowledge, research, and practical solutions to safeguard gibbons.

Collaboration and Networking: A Platform for Progress

The collaborative spirit that pervaded both the Primate Symposium and the Gibbon Conference fostered an engaging atmosphere. Participants were able to showcase the significance of their work, disseminate cutting-edge research findings, and spark dialogue around innovative solutions. The events created numerous networking opportunities, facilitating the exchange of ideas and the creation of new partnerships across borders.

Attendees walked away inspired by the vibrant environment that encouraged future collaborations, both among individuals and between diverse conservation organizations. It is this spirit of partnership that holds the key to advancing gibbon conservation efforts.

Looking Ahead: The 9th Asia Primate Symposium

The success of the 3rd Gibbon Conference would not have been possible without vital funding from the IUCN Section on Small Apes, along with generous contributions from organizations like the Three Monkeys Wildlife Conservancy and other international sponsors. A special thanks is extended to the dedicated volunteers whose efforts behind the scenes ensured the smooth execution of the events.

As the 8th Asia Primate Symposium and 3rd Gibbon Conference conclude, attention turns to the future. The 9th Asia Primate Symposium is scheduled to take place from November 20th to 23rd, 2024, in Medan, North Sumatra, Indonesia. A consortium of leading conservation organizations, including the Orangutan Information Centre (OIC), the Indonesia Orangutan Conservation Forum (FORINA), and Yayasan Konservasi Ekosistem Alam Nusantara (KIARA), will form the APS Indonesia Secretariat to organize this future gathering.

The legacy of collaboration, dedication, and passion forged during these events will undoubtedly continue, providing a strong foundation for future primate conservation efforts across Asia.
